New research suggests that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such drugs must be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to original mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting usually have a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Users who have stopped the medication report a intense return of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
