Trump's former lawyer leaves her post in the wake of court rules against her service.
Alina Habba has left her position as the US Attorney for New Jersey. This decision was prompted by a court battle that questioned her right to occupy the role.
Attorney General's Statement
The head of the Justice Department, Pam Bondi, confirmed the prosecutor's departure on Monday. She commented that the appeals court finding made it impossible for her to effectively run her office.
"But do not mistake adherence to the ruling as defeat," she declared. "The effort will now extend throughout the nation."
Judicial Challenge
Habba's exit comes a week after a federal appellate panel determined that she had been serving in violation of the law as the federal prosecutor. This ruling is likely to affect many criminal cases in the Garden State.
The judicial panel ruled that a temporary posting that bypassed the advice and consent of the Senate violated the Federal Vacancies Reform Act.

Bondi said that the former prosecutor will continue working within the Department of Justice as a top consultant. She will seek further review of the ruling, in the hope of achieving a reversal.
In a statement, she wrote that judges "should not be able to countermand the appointment of attorneys entrusted with carrying out the fundamental role of the presidency of enforcing the law."
Performance in Office
The attorney general commended the prosecutor's work and said that while she was in charge, the state capital of Newark saw a 20% reduction in offenses. It was also reported that the city of Camden experienced its first summer in half a century free from homicides.
Background and Previous Role
The 41-year-old attorney, was initially recruited to Donald Trump's lawyers in recent years. She went on to acted for Trump in his hush-money trial in 2024, leading to his conviction on 34 counts of document fraud.
Earlier, her appointment to the top New Jersey post, the former president had announced he was selecting her as his presidential counsellor during his second administration, describing the lawyer as deeply loyal and a dedicated fighter for justice.
