The beloved police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th installment, announced by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Belfast this spring, according to the production team.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The last series concluded in recent years with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only arrived this week.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain working to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most sensitive case to date."

New Character and Complex Case

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

Yet, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the background, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers watch the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh season."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."

"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."

Show History

The drama launched in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

The BBC has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of series six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

However, the corporation announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
