The Details Known Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and more than 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have stated the death toll is 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.

Those who died are yet to be officially identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the individuals who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
