The City of Seattle's Pride Celebrations Will Go Ahead During FIFA Tournament Despite Objections from Egypt and Iran
Arrangements to hold LGBTQ+ rights celebrations throughout the city amid the upcoming World Cup will continue as scheduled, despite Iranian and Egyptian football federations voiced strong concerns regarding a scheduled “Pride Match.”
Stadium Policy and City Celebrations
Seattle's planning committee have confirmed they are “proceeding as planned” with Pride activities outside the stadium. This coincides with the tournament group fixture featuring Iran and Egypt on 26 June. Additionally, FIFA has a policy allowing Pride flags to be brought into the match venue.
“As the local organising committee, our primary task is to get the city ready to welcome visitors for the matches and oversee the city experience outside of Seattle Stadium,” stated a committee representative.
Legal Context Behind the Formal Complaints
Homosexuality is illegal in Iran, while in Egypt, morality laws are frequently employed to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Egypt's football association declared it did not want to be linked to events that “directly contradict the cultural, religious and social values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” Similarly, the head of Iran's soccer body publicly registered “its opposition against the issue.”
The Governing Body's Position Regarding Flags and Banners
Fifa maintains operational control over match venues on matchdays. Although its rules forbid banners and flags with political messages, it allows flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” a category which includes the rainbow flag. This regulation was applied at the previous tournament in Qatar and was reinforced after incidents of authorities confiscating flags.
