Last year, actor Jude Law remarked he “didn’t fear any repercussions” for portraying Vladimir Putin in a new film. This production, however, could coincide so closely with the mythologized version promoted by Russian state media that, within Russia, it reads as a compliment rather than a challenge.

The Crafted Superhero

For years, the Russian political apparatus and its pop-culture machine have worked together to forge a made-to-measure version of Putin. This figure is a political superhero without age or mistakes, an ex-intelligence officer reimagined as a local 007 who always knows beyond what he shows.

Screen-Based Support

A notable instance is a television show launched last fall, directed by a pro-government filmmaker. The protagonist is a invented security officer selected by fate to “save” Russia from disorder. Although he is called Mikhail, the message is unmistakable: the savior must be a known figure from the secret services.

Western portrayals often end up reinforcing this identical story rather than debunking it. A new film based on a popular book aims to subvert the leader's mythology by presenting him as a symptom but as a consequence, moving the narrative weight to the spin doctors surrounding him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

On screen, Putin is presented as having been chosen by influential figures to stabilise the country because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. They visit him and all but beg him to become president. His response is that he would rather govern from the shadows, seeking permanent power.

This tale is the Kremlin’s export myth: the cool, reluctant strategist guided by fate. Historically, none of this ever happened.

The Reality of the Casting Call

No one ever begged him to take the job. The position was effectively a selection process with many candidates. Central to this process stood a powerful businessman from the Yeltsin era who expected to run the state de facto.

• His list featured various figures, among them an opposition leader subsequently assassinated and a security service director.
• Per an expert who researched Putin’s biography, the future president merely met the required parameters: obedient, from the intelligence world, and not a communist or a liberal.
• A businessman familiar with the process stated the primary requirement was controllability and faithfulness, not leadership.

Constructing the Spy Legend

Analysts concur that the notion of Putin as a master operative was built after the fact. Claims about his “recruitment work” in East Germany fall apart under examination. In essence, he was an administrator and routine duties, a mid-level functionary not engaged in field operations.

Curiously, the shift to framing him as a “007” could partly have been inspired by Daniel Craig’s arrival as 007. His harder version prompted local outlets and social media to make comparisons with their leader. Edited images replacing the actor's likeness with Putin’s appeared on Moscow streets, feeding the increasing trend to see him as a Russian 007.

A Propaganda Win?

Given the casting, an actor popular with viewers there, the authorities are likely to seize the chance to frame his casting as a small victory. The film's exclusion of public dissent, the political rivals, or prominent activists in the story, despite covering the past decade, is a pleasant bonus for state propaganda.

In Russian cinema, the president is frequently an all-powerful presence who remains unseen on screen. He is signaled through photographs or orders from on high. Now, he finally acquires a recognizable face—one that may inadvertently validate the very myths it might seek to question.
