Cameron Norrie secured the most notable success of his career by coming back from a set down to defeat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Even though he had before defeated Alcaraz on two occasions, this triumph marks Norrie's initial win over a reigning world No 1.

"Bouncing back from health issues last year, I was defeated in the opening stage of qualifiers here. I just aimed to enjoy my performance in the latter part of the year. To achieve a triumph like this, it's the greatest success of my professional life, my initial victory over the global number one and probably the most confident player in the sport right now."

Norrie, ranked 31st in the world, also stopped Alcaraz's supreme streak of nine finals in a row and 17 straight elite tournament successes, which marked the finest stretch of performances in the Spaniard's developing career.

The top seed appeared to be advancing smoothly to a win at the start as he sailed in the opening set. However, Norrie slowly battled back back into the game by executing with sharper placement and engaging the Spanish opponent into lengthy, demanding exchanges. His unceasing steadiness and reliability gradually made an impact.

During large parts of the battle, the world number one delivered strong serves but he struggled badly to locate his rhythm on his baseline shots. The 22-year-old seemed particularly uncomfortable executing his primary weapon, which has been the most effective stroke in the game for a large part of this year, committing 29 forehand unforced errors and a total of 54 mistakes. On the other side, Norrie offered his opponent very few errors, sustaining his reliability, physicality and power the entire contest while serving efficiently and choosing his moments to advance into the court and strike effectively.
