New York City Mayor Eric Adams Will Support Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election
NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams revealed his decision to support Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, despite an extended period of public tension between the two Democratic figures.
A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism
Just last month, the mayor had publicly condemned Cuomo, calling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and alleging of having “a history of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Nonetheless, in a recent development, Adams changed his position, stating he now plans to campaign alongside the former governor in communities where he holds strong support.
“It's essential to energize the communities of color that have experienced gentrification on how vital this election is,” the mayor stated.
He added, “Residents have seen their rents increase in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those areas, and I plan to visit to those communities and speak one on one with community leaders and organizations and I will appear with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them engaged.”
Election Landscape and Current Developments
The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the competition between Cuomo and democratic socialist his main rival, whose growing support has drawn interest globally and represented aspirations for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democrats.
In a latest mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa declared they would decline Adams’s endorsement if offered.
Months ago, the mayor had begun his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after facing federal corruption charges which were later thrown out in exchange for Adams’s cooperation with federal immigration raids across the city.
During a separate media briefing on Thursday, Adams answered journalists asking about the support announcement by saying, “Andrew and I will appear together this evening.”
This development followed a day after the two politicians were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the the NBA team's first game at Madison Square Garden, which occurred right after a contentious candidate debate.
