Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty
Democratic officials demonstrated anger after the ex-president accused a group of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and declared they should be taken into custody and punished "with execution" following their publication of a disputed video.
The Message That Triggered the Controversy
The clip, shared on Tuesday, features six Democratic elected officials who previously acted in defense or security positions.
"Similar to us, you all took an vow to safeguard and defend this constitution," the representatives declared in the brief video. "And right now, the threats to our governing document don't only come from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can reject improper directives, you should decline illegal orders. No one has to follow directives that break the statutes or our national charter."
The Former President's Incensed Reply
The video message seemed to trigger a furious response from the ex-president.
On Thursday morning, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional post, he declared: "This is really concerning, and Dangerous to our United States. Their comments cannot be enabled to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Representatives Answer
Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, Top Democrats issued a combined announcement condemning the statements.
"Partisan aggression has no role in this nation," they wrote. "Congress members who appeared in the video all served our country with exceptional loyalty and excellence. We strongly censure Donald Trump's disgusting and risky threats of violence against members of Congress, and appeal to House Republicans to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to ensure the safety of these officials and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must without delay take down these extreme social media posts and retract his violent language before he leads to violence," the declaration stated.
Officials' Strong Reaction
The representatives who were featured in the video also published a declaration.
"We serve as ex-military personnel and security experts who value this nation and swore an pledge to defend and uphold the constitution of the United States," they stated. "That oath continues forever, and we intend to maintain it. No threat, pressure, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that important obligation."
"The most revealing aspect is that the former president deems it subject to penalty by execution for us to repeat the legal requirements," they continued. "Our service members should know that we have their support as they execute their oath to the national charter and duty to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."
They stated: "All citizens must come together and condemn the former president's requests for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a moment for principled stance."
More Political Comments
The Opposition leader also condemned Trump's comments and posted on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the President of the United States is demanding the death of elected officials."
He continued: "This is an outright THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this without delay and unconditionally."
The Republican House speaker justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", adding: "This represents very dangerous, you have leading members of Congress telling soldiers to defy commands, I think that is historic in the nation's past."
The Conservative representative also allegedly stated to media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the violation of sedition" but that "attorneys have to examine the wording and decide all that."
Executive Branch Statement
During a White House press conference on that day, when inquired by a journalist, "Is the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the executive branch representative answered: "Absolutely not."
"We should understand about what the president is addressing," the official stated. "We see current representatives of the federal government who worked together to arrange a digital communication to individuals of the national defense, to active duty service members advising them to defy the president's legal commands."
She said: "The purity of our armed forces depends on the hierarchy, and if that chain of command is compromised, it can result in fatalities, it can cause chaos, and that's what these members of Congress ... are essentially supporting."
