The Gunners' boss remains confident that his squad can continue to cope with player absences following confirming that star striker Kai Havertz is not ready for several more weeks.

Extended Absence for German Star

Havertz has been out for months after undergoing knee surgery. Originally slated to return earlier in December, the manager stated the player hit a snag when advancing his rehabilitation and could not progress “the next phase.”

“We learned, and we were able to put together a squad that is considerably steadier and has greater depth,” stated the manager.

Tactical Decisions for Midweek Fixture

This update creates a dilemma for Wednesday’s fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. A decision is required between persisting with Mikel Merino, who found the net as a makeshift striker against Chelsea, or reinstating Viktor Gyökeres, who featured briefly from a muscle injury in the latter stages. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus is in contention post-recovery.

Defensive Concerns Remain

Further fitness issues affect centre-back William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the Stamford Bridge game. Therefore, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié will probably start again in the heart of the defence for the league leaders.

Arteta feels the £250m spend on squad depth during the summer has placed the club in a more robust situation to navigate such unavailability.

Squad Depth Key to Title Challenge

When asked if increased squad depth was aiding their title quest, his response was positive. “Yes, because this season has presented greater challenges in the attacking line, and now what’s happening with the defence,” he added.

“Our previous experiences taught us that we must deploy players in alternative spots, and they have to be able to perform various functions if we want to compete at the highest level. And the instance of Mikel Merino.”

Arteta's Support for Frustrated Havertz

Addressing the delay highlighted by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta offered further detail. “He followed all protocols. He was unable to progress to the required step and now it’s looking like we have solved that issue.”

Arteta expressed his keenness to welcome him back. “The team is keen to have him. I mean, it’s a player that, for me, I admire greatly for what he brings to the team, but his personality, his attitude. I watch him struggle on the sidelines.”

“His playing record is phenomenal, he’s been always available, and I am eagerly awaiting to get him back with the squad and playing because I feel it’s going to be a significant uplift.”
